  • Politiek in verzorgingsstaat Nederland: misrepresentatie en civiele reconstructie

    Michiel

Anders vervalt bezuinigingspolitiek in voorspiegelarij. Alsof

What are the connections between the intelligence agencies and organized crime around the world, and how do these connections affect the banking industry? Was the financial collapse of 2008 precipitated by the temporary refusal of the Mexican mob to launder money in major banks? The answer to these and other questions await you in this fascinating article of little-known banking history.
  • Succesvolle duurzaamheid vraagt zuivere en transparante verbindingen

    Lars Tjoeng

  • Manifesto of the Communist Party

    Karl Marx

Politiek en nieuws The Manifesto of the Communist Party was drafted as its party program by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels in Brussels at the order of the second congress of the League of Communists (December 2-8, 1847) The Manifesto marked the end of a year-long discussion within the League of the Just about the objectives and methods of proletarian emancipation and implied the conclusion of its transformation into the League of Communists. In Marxist literature this publication, which marked a milestone in the theoretical evolution of Marx and Engels and reflected the crucial principles of their world view in a relatively self-contained and complete form, is held to be the birth certificate of scientific socialism, which was fundamentally distinct from utopian socialism. Brought into its final version by Marx, it undoubtedly was the most brilliant and widely read writing of Marx and Engels; thanks to its down-to-earth analysis of society with its concise and cogent portrayal of a humanizing-liberating
  • Second Treatise of Government

    John Locke

Politiek en nieuws In the state of nature, natural law governs behavior, and each person has license to execute that law against someone who wrongs them by infringing on their rights. People take what they need from the earth, but hoard just enough to cover their needs. Eventually, people begin to trade their excess goods with each other, until they develop a common currency for barter, or money.

  • Green Energy War

    John Geesman

Openbare administratie No drumbeat resonates like the mobilization of public opinion for war. In 2008 and 2009, policy elites around the world prepared for US re-entry to the global climate debate. These short narrative bursts capture the heady aspirations of the time, tracing the strategic perimeter of energy initiatives that soon turned comatose – a “weird and unintended prequel” to the exuberant 21 Machetes.
  • The Retirement Crisis

    Scott Thorpe

Openbare administratie Every day for the next twenty years, 10,000 baby boomers will retire. Paying for the boomers retirement will cost an additional 10% of GDP, the equivalent our current spending on the military, public education, and all colleges and universities. This is an enormous sum, but most boomers have not saved enough to support themselves. Instead they are depending on governments that are in even worse financial shape. The Retirement Crisis details how bad the problem is, and how we may resolve it.
  • On War — Volume 1

    Carl von Clausewitz

  • Laat ons eens aan het woord

    Elisabeth Meuleman

  • Growing a Better Future

Robert Bailey, Duncan Green, Naomi Hossain, Kate Kilpatrick, Swati Narayan, Bertram Zagema, Tim Gore & Debbie Hillier

Politiek en nieuws The global food system works only for the few – for most of us it is broken. It leaves the billions who consume food lacking sufficient power and knowledge about what they buy and eat, and the majority of small food producers dis-empowered and unable to fulfil their productive potential. The failure of the system flows from failures of government – failures to regulate, to correct, to protect, to resist, to invest – which mean that companies, interest groups, and elites are able to plunder resources and to redirect flows of finance, knowledge, and food.  Growing a Better Future describes a new age of growing crisis: food price spikes and oil price hikes, devastating weather events, financial meltdowns, and global contagion. It shows how the food system is at once a driver of this fragility and highly vulnerable to it, and why in the twenty-first century it leaves 925 million people hungry. Growing a Better Future supports a new campaign with a simple message: another future
  • The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844

    Friedrich Engels

Politiek en nieuws This is Engels' first book (since considered a classic account of England's working class in the industrial age), which argues that workers paid a heavy price for the industrial revolution that swept the country.

  • Target Iran: Drawing Red Lines in the Sand

    William John Cox

Politieke wetenschappen At 60 manuscript pages and 100 sources, Target Iran is of the new genre of eBooks on critical political subjects written for the modern reader who requires reliable background information to reach an informed opinion, but whose time is too limited to go to the library or conduct independent research. A history of Iran and its conflict with the United States and Israel over its uranium enrichment program, a discussion of the likelihood of war between the parties and a proposal for a comprehensive nuclear weapons policy for all nations. Iran, the last remnant of the ancient Persian Empire, is presently threatened by the greatest superpower in history - the United States of America. Rather than attack, or allow Israel to attack, the United States should immediately reestablish diplomatic relations with Iran, negotiate unconditionally and ensure the protection of Iran from armed attack by Israel or any other nation. The U.S. should adopt a comprehensive policy that seeks to avoid the expa
  • 1001 Sex Positions

    Donald R. Miklich

Openbare administratie This essay is a non-economists’ (there’s not a bit of math in it) inquiry into the US employment losses which have been happening for about a half century. Businesses have been reducing workers and their pay in order to increase shareholder profits. Many ways have been used to do this, but more and more computers and robotics are replacing workers. Well informed economists fear that in a decade or two such automation may eliminate almost half of US jobs! The worker reduction practice has been justified by economic theory which claims (though with dubious supporting evidence) that it maximizes productivity. This book argues that, even if this claim is correct, the practice damages the economy and the nation. Our economy is already massively productive, abundantly supplying our needs and desires. As the book title implies, no one needs nor wants such totally superfluous things as 1001 sex positions. Therefore, for the highly productive US economy to focus on more productivity is nei
  • Standard & Poor's vs. Obama

    James Wilson

Politiek en nieuws Standard & Poor's (a ratings agency) decision to downgrade the credit rating of the US Federal Government was historical, and raised questions not only about the fiscal position of the United States, but the credibility of Standard & Poor's itself. President Obama's defiant response to the downgrade stated that America would 'always be a AAA nation'. One question was left begging by both sides: Who is right? Standard & Poor's, or the President? This essay answers that question.

  • The Truth about Syria

    Barry Rubin

Politieke wetenschappen Beyond the political typology it embodies, Syria also provides the best case study of what has happened in the Arab world, and thus in the Middle East, during the last half-century. When it gained independence, Syria was a democratic country with a seemingly bright future. Blessed with fertile land and ample resources, Syria boasted good relations with the West as well as an energetic, entrepreneurial middle class. Yet a combination of radical intellectuals, militant ideologies, and ambitiously politicized military officers pushed Syria down a different path which has led to turmoil and disaster.
  • Putin's Russia: How It Rose, How It Is Maintained, and How It Might End

    Leon Aron

Politiek en nieuws In this groundbreaking collection, nine of Russia's leading scholars and experts describe and analyze some of the Vladimir Putin regime’s key structural strengths and weaknesses and look at their implications for both the present and the future. As far as the regime’s fault lines are concerned, the evidence presented by the authors shows no reversal, or even narrowing, of these structural dysfunctions in Putin’s third presidential term.  Topics covered here include Russia's political economy, political geography, and politics of federalism; the regime, ideology, public opinion, and legitimacy; and potential defeat and radicalization of civil society. Emerging in these pages is a finely textured portrait of a society rife in complexities, contradictions, and postponed but looming crises.

  • The Arab States and the Palestine Conflict

    Barry Rubin

Politieke wetenschappen Hundreds of books and thousands of articles have been devoted to the history and contemporary course of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The confrontation within Palestine, the participation of Great Britain, the United States, and the United Nations, and the impact of these events on Jews and Palestinian Arabs have all been endlessly chronicled. Surprisingly little attention, however, has been devoted to the question of how the Arab states entered the battle in the first place. In addition to tracing the events involved in the growing intervention by Arab states in Palestine, this book attempts to analyze two specific issues. How did internal conditions in the various Arab countries affect their involvement in Palestine? How did the network of alliances and conflict among the Arab governments shape their Palestine policies? How can one hope to understand the conflict without exploring this essential dimension? If Arab nations have spilled so much passion, spent many lives and so many billi
  • Don't Panic, Organise!

    Mute Publishing

Politieke wetenschappen the inability for capital, and therefore the state, to pay for the costs of producing a well educated workforce or to guarantee that investment in education will result in a more vigorous economy and increased living standards for those with qualifications. This breakdown, and the dogmatism of free market economics which seeks to alleviate it, has seen the imposition of a business rationale onto what previously had been regarded as the provision of a public service, sometimes even a public good in the UK and across Europe. From the investment of endowment funds on the market, to the conversion of students into (badly ripped off) consumers, to the no-frills fixed-term contracts being doled out to staff, to the speculative purchase of the future IP generated by scientific and technical departments, to the intended exchangeability of all qualifications under the Bologna Process, education is being ever more deeply determined by free market principles. With the ground changing this fast u

    Max Weber & Olaf Kellerhoff

Politiek en nieuws Initially, a lecture for students this essay by Max Weber (1864-1920), the founder of political sociology, turned out to be a classic of political sciences. Until today it is a set book for students. The German academic explores the field of professional politicians - who make their living 'off' or 'for' politics. He explains what it needs to be a leader. This book is a must read - not only for politicians and students, but every citizen with responsibility towards his state.
  • Istanbul Intrigues

    Barry Rubin

Politieke wetenschappen This is the story of Istanbul--but also of Turkey, the Balkans, and the eastern Mediterranean--during World War II, based on extensive interviews and the use of archives, especially those of the OSS, which I was the first to see for this region. The book is written as a cross between a scholarly work and a real-life thriller. The status of Turkey as a neutral country made it a center of espionage, a sort of actual equivalent of the film "Casablanca." Aspects of the story include the Allied-Axis struggle to get Turkey on their side; the spy rings set up in the Middle East and the Balkans; the attempts of Jews to escape through Turkey; the Allies' covert war in Greece, Yugoslavia, Hungary, and other countries; and the first accurate account of how the Germans recruited the British ambassador's valet as a spy, who could have been their most successful agent of the war if only they had listened to his warnings. Other interesting stories include America's first faltering attempts to establ

  • Writings of Thomas Paine — Volume 2 : the Rights of Man

    Thomas Paine

Politiek en nieuws Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an English pamphleteer, revolutionary, radical, inventor, and intellectual. He lived and worked in Britain until age 37, when he emigrated to the British American colonies, in time to participate in the American Revolution. His principal contribution was the powerful, widely-read pamphlet Common Sense (1776), advocating colonial America's independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, and The American Crisis (1776- 1783), a pro-revolutionary pamphlet series. Later, he greatly influenced the French Revolution. He wrote the Rights of Man (1791), a guide to Enlightenment ideas. Despite not speaking French, he was elected to the French National Convention in 1792. The Girondists regarded him as an ally, so, the Montagnards, especially Robespierre, regarded him as an enemy. In December of 1793, he was arrested and imprisoned in Paris, then released in 1794. He became notorious because of The Age of Reason (1793-94), the book advocating deism and arguing agains

Children Who Changed the World, tells the stories of more than twenty children who have opened the world’s eyes to serious problems in society, and who have contributed to the solution. As children, they have changed our world for the better.   Children like Iqbal Masih, Andrew Adansi, Ishmael Beah, Urmila Chaudhary and Nujood Ali spoke out against child labour, discrimination, child marriage, poverty, exclusion from education, war, disease and hunger. • A fri wortu / Het vrije woord

We are a nation of suers, and the "injured" party never says they're suing to get a lot of money, even though that's exactly why they're doing it. Rather, they always say they're suing so that nobody else will have to go through what they went through. The standard form is "so that nothing like this will ever happen again". That sounds pretty noble, so that's why I wrote this book... so that nothing like this will ever happen again!

  • The Undemocratic Dilemma

    Yascha Mounk

Politiek en nieuws Over the past decades, the ability of liberal democracies around the world to translate popular views into public policy has declined. This is a result of two major developments: Legislatures have become less reflective of popular opinion because of the growing role of money in politics. At the same time, they have also become less powerful because of the growing importance of bureaucratic agencies, central banks, judicial review, free trade, and international institutions. But there are no easy solutions, since some of these institutions are needed to meet high expectations on government performance. The “technocratic dilemma” thus poses a real threat to liberal democracy’s ability to meet the public’s twin demands of responsiveness and performance.

Politiek en nieuws This book aims to analyze what Eurosceptic parties themselves claim are the core principles upon which they base their opposition towards the European Union. While most scientists have focused on voter behavior or organizational styles when trying to define Eurosceptic parties’ political platforms, I believe it is key to pay more attention to what these political parties themselves argue are the core principles upon which they base their Euroscepticism. That is exactly what this research paper aims to do by asking: On what core principles do Eurosceptic parties base their anti-EU rhetoric?

  • The End of the European Dream

    Stefan Auer

Politiek en nieuws Europe's better times were meant to be ahead of it. Not so long ago, the European dream was believed to have provided the best vision of the future; Europe was going to run the twenty-first century, having created an entirely new species of human organization, the likes of which the world has never seen. If the West – and most of the world – was American in the twentieth century, the twenty-first century was going to be European. Europe was going to lead the world by example; do it gently. "Soft power Europe" would rule without anyone noticing but everyone benefiting. All these assumptions proved hubristic: Europe's turn of fortune is humbling, humiliating and, perhaps, irreversible.

    Western Shugden Society

Politiek en nieuws With this book the Western Shugden Society wishes that individual people around the world will use their influence to help millions of Buddhist practitioners who are presently suffering religious persecution instigated by the Dalai Lama of Tibet. For this reason we are making the e-book available at a complimentary price. We ask you to read this book and then ask the Dalai Lama to stop this persecution. For his own personal political ends the Dalai Lama is persecuting Buddhist people who practise the Buddhist Deity Dorje Shugden. Most people around the world believe that the Dalai Lama is a compassionate man of peace, but the hidden reality is that, because of the high regard in which the ancient title is held, the Dalai Lama is actually now a dictator who is systematically causing immense suffering to millions of innocent people throughout the world. His actions banning the practice of Dorje Shugden and persecuting practitioners blatantly contravene the United Nations Universal Decla
  • The Bitcoin Revolution

    Steven Hager

Politiek en nieuws I came late to Bitcoin and have zero understanding of the technical complexities of cryptography, but I do realize Bitcoin is open source and completely transparent and completely non-predatory in design, a real departure from our banking industry. Any assets moved into Bitcoin virtually disappear from the public record at this point and do not become taxable events until they are brought back into the system. Bitcoin has numerous benefits to offer and represents a real threat to our current corrupt money system. The media has been relentlessly negative on bitcoins for a reason: they threaten the status quo. This text serves as a manifesto for the rise of a Bitcoin nation.
  • Native Life in South Africa

    Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje

Politiek en nieuws "Native Life in South Africa" is one of the most remarkable books on Africa, by one of the continent's most remarkable writers. It was written as a work of impassioned political propaganda, exposing the plight of black South Africans under the whites-only government of newly unified South Africa. It focuses on the effects of the 1913 Natives' Land Act which introduced a uniform system of land segregation between the races. It resulted, as Plaatje shows, in the immediate expulsion of blacks, as "squatters", from their ancestral lands in the Orange Free State now declared "white". But Native Life succeeds in being much more than a work of propaganda. It is a vital social document which captures the spirit of an age and shows the effects of rural segregation on the everyday life of people.

From this definition, Bastiat concluded that the law cannot defend life, liberty and property if it promotes socialist policies inherently opposed to these very things. In this way, he says, the law is perverted and turned against the thing it is supposed to defend.

  • Modern Dictators - Third World Coup Makers, Strongmen, and Populist Tyrants

    Barry Rubin

Politieke wetenschappen The evolution of dictatorship is as much a part of history as the development of democracy. In our ear persuasion has become as powerful a force as repression in creating and maintaining such regimes. Debates over the nature of these systems are at the center of the contemporary U.S. and European foreign policy debates. The flourishing of dictatorship has challenged views of history flavored with optimism and based on a deterministic view that material development brings political progress. At the same time a vision of the world too narrowly focused on the conflict between communism and capitalism must be refocused to understand the emergence of a third World. In fact, it is impossible to defend the West without such an understanding. Our current discussion of dictatorship, much influenced by earlier analyses of "totalitarianism" based on Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Russia at their peak of control and repression, needs to be updated. This model applies only imperfectly to contempora
  • Things That Don't Exist: a Manifesto

    Anonymous

Politieke wetenschappen "The world at it's currently run relies on the assumption that each and every member of the earth's population believe in three fundamental ideas: money, nationality and status. These three concepts have one thing in common: they only exist in our imaginations. Not everyone recognises these concepts as valid, but officially we all do. As far as the media are concerned, the non-existence of these three works of fiction is the greatest taboo of our time. They're taken for granted in the same way volcanoes are taken for granted. They're part of our world, and out of our control. Now is the time for questions. Where did these beliefs come from? Why are they here? And how do we get rid of them?"

  • Mitt Romney and the Mormon Church: Questions

    William John Cox

Politieke wetenschappen Voters of every political persuasion who are considering voting for Mitt Romney, and who think his religious convictions are benign, must carefully evaluate his religious beliefs to determine for themselves if that is true, and they have every right to do so. Voters, who are becoming increasingly concerned about government intrusion into their lives and the loss of their personal freedoms, must ask themselves whether they want to vote for a president who has spent the last 50 years enthusiastically proselytizing for a secret religion that believes its priests have the sacred right to dictate the health, moral, psychological and financial decisions of its members. Is that a mindset they want in their president? Voters have to honestly ask themselves whether Mitt Romney "shares their religious values" and if not, what those differences will mean to them, their families and their country, should he be elected president. Voters will have choices other than Mitt Romney and Barack Obama in

  • J'accuse

  • Essay: THE WRITING EFFECT

    Karol Bojnowski

Politieke wetenschappen Thanks to scientists like Dr. John Searle, Mills Professor of the Philosophy of Mind and Language at University of California- Berkeley, some key points about us Homo sapiens have been established. These points are rather remarkable. It turns out that the big step between civilization and more primitive forms of human society is written language. He says writing constitutes civilization. It is the infrastructure of civilization itself. Writing is a virtual reality environment for the human mind. The key word is virtual. It has affected who we are, how we think, how we remember, how we organize. We aren't born with it. Homo sapiens must learn how to live as civilized human beings. Advanced forms of civilization, such as killing others because we disagree with them, marriage, or becoming a newspaper editor, are only possible because of written language. Written language shapes our cognition. What does this mean?

But even with 99 percent adult literacy, and 98 percent households owning television, the “Ninety Nine Percent” have, till now, chosen to suffer their dwindling prosperity in silence. They have agitated against wars but they have never agitated against poverty, against hunger, against dwindling facilities at public schools, against government policies which favor the rich and the corporations at the expense of the “Ninety Nine Percent”. • The Works of Lord Byron. Vol. 3

    George Gordon Byron

Politiek en nieuws The present volume contains the six metrical tales which were composed within the years 1812 and 1815, the Hebrew Melodies, and the minor poems of 1809-1816. With the exception of the first fifteen poems (1809-1811)—Chansons de Voyage, as they might be called—the volume as a whole was produced on English soil. Beginning with the Giaour; which followed in the wake of Childe Harold and shared its triumph, and ending with the ill-omened Domestic Pieces, or Poems of the Separation, the poems which Byron wrote in his own country synchronize with his popularity as a poet by the acclaim and suffrages of his own countrymen. His greatest work, by which his lasting fame has been established, and by which his relative merits as a great poet will be judged in the future, was yet to come; but the work which made his name, which is stamped with his sign-manual, and which has come to be regarded as distinctively and characteristically Byronic, preceded maturity
