  • The Art of War

    Sun Tzu

Militaire geschiedenis An Apple Books Classic edition. It’s believed that Sun Tzu wrote this Chinese military primer during the 5th century BC-hundreds of years before the Bible. The book’s 13 chapters explore principles that statesmen around the globe have employed for centuries to defeat their enemies at war. Sun Tzu starts by mapping out the five fundamental factors that lead to war. He then covers a wide range of topics, from avoiding conflict altogether to strategically positioning soldiers, pulling off tactical maneuvers, and putting spies to use. Despite the technological advances made since The Art of War was published, Sun Tzu is still considered one of history’s foremost military strategists, and his methods still ring true. While he wrote the book as a manual for those who would literally wield swords, it has reached a much broader audience in this day and age. Warriors of all kinds-like corporate leaders or athletes-seek out Sun Tzu’s wisdom in their quest for success.
  • Willem de Zwijger, Prins van Oranje

    Ruth Putnam

  • The Plight of the Working Class

    Frederick Engels

Geschiedenis Europa Frederick Engels (1820–1895) was twenty-two years old when he left Germany in the autumn of 1842 to settle in England. He came from a wealthy family of cotton manufacturers, which had established a branch in Manchester, in the heart of the new industrial capitalism. A contemporary of Karl Marx, Engels’ reaction to the industrial culture of the family business and the narrow-mindedness of his home life had made him a communist. While his father may have hoped this sojourn in England would make Frederick into a solid businessman, the son likely looked forward to immersing himself amidst the British proletariat, which he already recognized as the crucial revolutionary force in the modern world. By 1844 Engels was at work on a book. Writing about contemporary working conditions was not a new idea: by the 1830s it had become clear to most astute observers that the social problems produced by the new industrialism was no longer simply a matter of “the poor” but of an historically un
  • Hiroshima

Told through the memories of survivors, this timeless, powerful and compassionate document has become a classic "that stirs the conscience of humanity" (The New York Times).

  • South

    Ernest Shackleton

Geschiedenis wereld An Apple Books Classic edition. “Huge blocks of ice, weighing many tons, were lifted into the air and tossed aside as other masses rose beneath them. We were helpless intruders in a strange world, our lives dependent upon the play of grim elementary forces that made a mock of our puny efforts.” In the canon of true stories of adventure and exploration, Ernest Shackleton’s first-person account of the Endurance expedition stands alone. In 1914, Shackleton’s crew set out to traverse the Antarctic continent When their ship was crushed between massive sheets of ice, hope soon gave way to terror. After being trapped on a floe, Shackleton’s men risk life and limb to reach the shores of a desolate outcrop, where a small group sets out in search of rescue. • De komedianten

    Louis Couperus

  • Ancient Egypt

    George Rawlinson

Geschiedenis van de oudheid Surveys the land and people of Egypt before taking the development of the nation through historic chapters. Told in a level of detail to rival Breasted's classic work on Egypt, this earlier study makes fascinating reading.
  • Tacitus on Germany

    Cornelius Tacitus

Geschiedenis Europa The whole of Germany is thus bounded; separated from Gaul, from Rhoetia and Pannonia, by the rivers Rhine and Danube; from Sarmatia and Dacia by mutual fear, or by high mountains: the rest is encompassed by the ocean, which forms huge bays, and comprehends a tract of islands immense in extent: for we have lately known certain nations and kingdoms there, such as the war discovered. The Rhine rising in the Rhoetian Alps from a summit altogether rocky and perpendicular, after a small winding towards the west, is lost in the Northern Ocean. The Danube issues out of the mountain Abnoba, one very high but very easy of ascent, and traversing several nations, falls by six streams into the Euxine Sea; for its seventh channel is absorbed in the Fenns.
  • The Epic of Gilgamish

    Stephen Langdon

Geschiedenis The exact period of the reign of this king is unknown, but in the list of the Sumerian kingdoms he is fifth ruler in the Dynasty of Erech, which was considered the second dynasty to reign after the Deluge. He was said to have ruled for 126 years.

  • Hitler's Youth: An Analysis of Mein Kampf

    Isuru Abeysinghe

Geschiedenis Hitler's autobiographical book Mein Kampf, the official doctrine of the NAZI regime during WWII, is not a book that many would consider to read. Modern society is generally very well acquainted with Hitler and the ultimate outcome of his philosophical stances and will automatically denounce such notions based on a purely humanitarian and moral standpoint. The book remains illegal in many parts of the world (particularly Europe) and it rightfully considered one of the most powerful, destructive and divisive doctrines in modern history. While the book is often confronting in it's content it is still to my opinion an essential read because contained therein are the techniques of a master manipulator. It shows clearly that the doctrine of genocide-inducing hatred is not always - or even generally - a chaotic ramble of spiteful extremist verses but rather a considered and deliberate propagandist argument, one which at many points seems benign and even agreeable and always poses a compellin
  • History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

    Edward Gibbon

Geschiedenis van de oudheid The great work of Gibbon is indispensable to the student of history. The literature of Europe offers no substitute for The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. It has obtained undisputed possession, as rightful occupant, of the vast period which it comprehends. However some subjects, which it embraces, may have undergone more complete investigation, on the general view of the whole period, this history is the sole undisputed authority to which all defer, and from which few appeal to the original writers, or to more modern compilers.
  • Een twaalftal samenspraken

    Desiderius Erasmus

Romans, he believed, had become effeminate, unwilling to live a tougher, "manly" military lifestyle.
  • Vertellingen van vroeger en later tijd

    Jacob Lennep

  • The Borgias

    Alexandre Dumas

Geschiedenis Europa His works show an intimate knowledge of the characters, and they are written without sparing the details. The subjects are of historical importance and show the semi-lawlessness that was typical of Europe in the Middle Ages. The 'Celebrated Crimes' series were an instant hit and Dumas was inundated with suggestions of other celebrated criminals to write about.
  • De Geschiedenis van het Grieksche Volk

    Eva March Tappan

  • An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

    Adam Smith

Geschiedenis Verenigde Staten He remembered how it had seemed to him to him, a priest sweet to die if he might die clasping unrebuked this woman in his arms. The blood throbbed in his temples as he recalled the wild thoughts that had swirled in a mad throng through his brain in those moments which had seemed like hours; the blood throbbed, too, in his wounded arm, so that a groan forced itself through his parched lips. He was constantly throwing himself to and fro as if to escape from some teasing thought, always to be by the sharp pang in his wound brought to a sense of his condition. The whole night passed in an agony of mind and body.
  • Leviathan

    Thomas Hobbes

Geschiedenis I have tried to follow as closely as possible the original, and to give the flavour of the text that Hobbes himself proof read, but the following differences were unavoidable. Hobbes used capitals and italics very extensively, for emphasis, for proper names, for quotations, and sometimes, it seems, just because. The original has very extensive margin notes, which are used to show where he introduces the definitions of words and concepts, to give in short the subject that a paragraph or section is dealing with, and to give references to his quotations, largely but not exclusively biblical.

  • The Rise of the Dutch Republic — Complete

    John Lothrop Motley

Geschiedenis Europa The rise of the Dutch Republic must ever be regarded as one of the leading events of modern times. Without the birth of this great commonwealth, the various historical phenomena of: the sixteenth and following centuries must have either not existed; or have presented themselves under essential modifications. The splendid empire of Charles the Fifth was erected upon the grave of liberty. It is a consolation to those who have hope in humanity to watch, under the reign of his successor, the gradual but triumphant resurrection of the spirit over which the sepulchre had so long been sealed.

  • Reisbrieven uit Afrika en Azië

    Aletta Henriette Jacobs

  • Hitler's Theory - An Analysis of Mein Kampf

  • History of Florence and of the Affairs of Italy

    Niccolò Machiavelli

Geschiedenis Europa Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great Italian historian, and one of the most eminent political writers of any age or country, was born at Florence, May 3, 1469. He was of an old though not wealthy Tuscan family, his father, who was a jurist, dying when Niccolo was sixteen years old. We know nothing of Machiavelli’s youth and little about his studies. He does not seem to have received the usual humanistic education of his time, as he knew no Greek. The first notice of Machiavelli is in 1498 when we find him holding the office of Secretary in the second Chancery of the Signoria, which office he retained till the downfall of the Florentine Republic in 1512. His unusual ability was soon recognized, and in 1500 he was sent on a mission to Louis XII. of France, and afterward on an embassy to Cæsar Borgia, the lord of Romagna, at Urbino. Machiavelli’s report and description of this and subsequent embassies to this prince, shows his undisguised admiration for the courage and cunning of C

  • The Wars of the Jews; or the history of the destruction of Jerusalem

    Flavius Josephus

Geschiedenis The Wars of the Jews (or The History of the Destruction of Jerusalem, or as it usually appears in modern English translations, The Jewish War - original title: Phlauiou Iôsêpou historia Ioudaïkou polemou pros Rhômaious bibliona) is a book written by the 1st century Jewish historian Josephus. It is a description of Jewish history from the capture of Jerusalem by the Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 164 BC to the fall and destruction of Jerusalem in the First Jewish-Roman War in AD 70. The book was written about 75, originally in Josephus's "paternal tongue", probably Aramaic, though this version has not survived. • Moriae encomium. Dutch

    Desiderius Erasmus

Daaromtrent is genoeg bekend geworden.

  • The Treasures of Pompeii & Herculaneum

Mary Beard, Alastair Smart, Joanne Berry, Alex Butterworth, Ray Laurence, Bee Wilson, Tim Auld & Andrew Wallace-Hadrill

Geschiedenis van de oudheid Two ordinary Roman cities on the Bay of Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum would probably have been footnotes in history had it not been for the sudden and savage method of their destruction in AD79, when Vesuvius erupted with cataclysmic force. The ruins lay buried for almost 1,700 years, their treasure-trove of artefacts preserved by the ash in which they were entombed. Their rediscovery has given us a unique insight into the lives of the people of the Roman Empire, how they worked and played, loved and worshipped. Here, in association with Goldman Sachs, supporter of the British Museum exhibition, ‘Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum’ (March 28-September 29 2013), we explore life (and death) in the ancient cities.

  • The History of Rome, Book I

    Theodor Mommsen

Geschiedenis van de oudheid The classical historian Theodor Mommsen (1817 1903) published his monumental History of Rome between 1854 and 1856. His work was received with widespread acclaim by the scholarly community and the reading public. In 1902 Mommsen was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and acclaimed as 'the greatest living master of the art of historical writing'. Mommsen rejected traditional Enlightenment accounts, which glorified ancient Rome; instead, guided by a new and rigorous criticism of sources, Mommsen began the demythologization of Roman history. In a vivacious and engaging style, Mommsen drew bold parallels between the nineteenth century and classical Rome. Volume 3 covers the turbulent period from the reforms of Tiberius Gracchus to the death of Sulla, with separate chapters on nationality, religion and education, and the Roman economy.
  • History of Australia and New Zealand

    Alexander Sutherland

Geschiedenis Australië en Oceanië To the people who lived four centuries ago in Europe only a very small portion of the earth's surface was known. Their geography was confined to the regions lying immediately around the Mediterranean, and including Europe, the north of Africa, and the west of Asia. Round these there was a margin, obscurely and imperfectly described in the reports of merchants; but by far the greater part of the world was utterly unknown. Great realms of darkness stretched all beyond, nd closely hemmed in the little circle of light. In these unknown lands our ancestors loved to picture everything that was strange and mysterious. They believed that the man who could penetrate far enough would find countries where inexhaustible riches were to be gathered without toil from fertile shores, or marvellous valleys; and though wild tales were told of the dangers supposed to fill these regions, yet to the more daring and adventurous these only made the visions of boundless wealth and enchanting loveliness seem
  • The War in South Africa

    Arthur Conan Doyle

Geschiedenis Arthur Conan Doyle made his reputation as a novelist, but far stranger than fiction is the creator of Sherlock Holmes' tale of the Boer War in South Africa. The then 40-year-old novelist wanted to see the war first hand as a soldier, but the Victorian army balked at having a popular author wielding a pen in its ranks. The army did accept him as a doctor and Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his work with a field hospital in Bloemfontein. Doyle's vivid account of the battles is in part thanks to the eye-witness accounts he got from his patients. Doyle has thoroughly mastered the details of the campaign, and presents them in a form that can be easily understood. Furthermore, his descriptions of the various engagements are masterpieces of graphic writing.

  • World War 2 History: True Stories of the Wehrmacht War Crimes and Atrocities

    Cyrus J. Zachary

Militaire geschiedenis The Second World War was, no doubt, one of the worst experiences mankind has ever faced. From torture to rape to murder, crimes against innocents were innumerous – Adolf Hitler, a diminutive man with the oratorical skills of a genius took advantage of a sensitive situation in the aftermath of Germany's defeat in the First World War and amassed enough power to bring the entire European continent to its knees. In the forefront of Hitler's troops were the Wehrmacht, which had some of the most elite, most powerful and most brutal soldiers in the world. What's sad is that at the end of the Second World War, when the Nuremberg Trials took place and most of the WW2 criminals were tried and then punished, the Wehrmacht was declared as not a criminal organization. This was because of a legal technicality and loophole that left them as simply part of the German Armed Forces. Just because they were ruled as 'not a criminal organization', it doesn't mean that they weren't criminals – there ar

  • The Reign of Tiberius, Out of the First Six Annals of Tacitus;

    Cornelius Tacitus

Geschiedenis van de oudheid Cornelius Tacitus' timeless history of three of Rome's most memorable emperors. Tacitus, who condemns the depravity of these rulers, which he saw as proof of the corrupting force of absolute power, writes caustically of the brutal and lecherous Tiberius, the weak and cuckolded Claudius, and "the artist" Nero. In particular, his gripping account of the bloody reigns of Tiberius and Nero brims with plots, murder, poisoning, suicide, uprisings, death, and destruction. The Annals also provides a vivid account of the violent suppression of the revolt led by Boudicca in Britain, the great fire of Rome under Nero, and the subsequent bloody persecution of the Christians.
  • World War 2: Stories of the Schutzstaffel: True Accounts of Hitler’s Personal Bodyguards

    Cyrus J. Zachary

Geschiedenis The instigator and the mastermind behind the Holocaust; Adolf Hitler of Germany, was at the forefront of the Second World War and ruined millions of lives, throwing the entire European continent into chaos. Not only was he hated by the whole world, even some of his own military commanders didn’t like him. Most leaders around the world rely on one, maybe two bodyguards to keep them safe. Even the President of the United States today has only one or two teams of security personnel; while there may be many men and women who take turns to protect their leader, the numbers are not as big as you would expect it to be. We will look at the origins of a number of bodies, such as the ‘Sturmabteilung’ or the SA, the Schutzstaffel (the SS) and the many other sub-sections of the SS such as the FBK, the LSSAH, etc., all of which were tasked with protecting Hitler. From the background, we will move on to individual accounts of men who served on these teams – they were Hitler’s persona

  • Castilië en Andalusië

    Jane Dieulafoy

Abuse and oppression could not fail to ensue, and, as a necessary consequence, efforts were made to lessen that power.

  • The History of Rome, Book III

    Theodor Mommsen

Geschiedenis van de oudheid From a small Iron-Age settlement on the banks of the Tiber, Rome grew to become the centre of an empire that dominated what was then known of the western world. This book recreates the evolution of that city, describing the individuals and events that made Rome a political and cultural conqueror. The book portrays not only the cynosures of the Roman world, but also lesser known figures, reassessing their impact upon both the character of Roman society and the development of the Empire. Rome's artistic achievements, especially in literature, architecture, sculpture and painting, are scrutinized, and the economic and social conditions of life for ordinary people are examined. Finally, the changing relationships between Rome and the peoples of its provinces, and the reasons for the ultimate disintegration, or transformation, of the western empire are closely examined.
