      Reizen en avontuur In dit eerste boek van de wereldberoemde schrijver, in 1863 geschreven, maakt een Engelse ontdekkingsreiziger een tocht per luchtballon over Afrika, van oost naar west. Deze nieuwe bewerking van het zo bekende verhaal bevat nogal wat technische uiteenzettingen over het vervoer per ballon. De stijl is wat plechtstatig, met vrij veel moeilijke, nogal hoogdravende woorden, vooral in het begin van het boek. Het taalgebruik is wat houterig, geen goedlopende, vloeiende zinnen, waardoor het verhaal wat moeizaam leest. Vrijwel ieder hoofdstuk staat op zichzelf en bevat een afgepast avontuur. Op het omslag staat een kleurenfoto, wat niet goed valt te rijmen met het feit dat het verhaal in het midden van de vorige eeuw speelt. Enkele eenvoudige zwart-witte tekeningen zonder enige esthetische waarde illustreren het boek. Vanaf ca. 11 jaar.

      Reizen in Europa Dit is een reisverslag in 150 pagina's, voorzien van ongeveer 40 films en zo'n 530 foto's over mijn fietstocht naar Rome. Ik maakte deze tocht bij het begin van mijn pensionering in de voetsporen van mijn vader die precies dezelfde fietsreis maakte in 1928, vandaar de ondertitel 'sulle orme del padre'. De hele tocht wordt van dag tot dag beschreven en de rit is voorzien van een groot aantal kaarten. Deze kaarten en de bijbehorende tracks in KML-formaat zijn ook beschikbaar voor degenen die deze reis al dan niet virtueel (in Google-earth) of in werkelijkheid willen nafietsen. Absoluut hoogtepunt was het binnentreden mét fiets in het Colosseum te Rome en een foto op dezelfde plaats als mijn vader 82 geleden. Hiervoor had ik dezelfde afstand al tweemaal eerder gereden, maar telkens werd de toegang mét fiets tot dit gebouw geweigerd. Toen ik dit keer Milaan al was gepasseerd, ontving ik tot mijn grote verbazing en vreugde een e-mailtje van de soprintendenza van het Colosseum met het ber

In 1909 bereidt hij een expeditie voor om als eerste de geografische noordpool te bereiken. Maar in september van dat jaar verneemt hij dat Robert Peary hem voor is geweest. In het geniep verandert Amundsen zijn plannen. Op 9 augustus 1910 verlaat de Fram de haven van Christiania (het huidige Oslo) en zet koers naar de Atlantische Oceaan. Pas wanneer de Fram in Madeira een tussenstop maakt, licht hij de bemanning in: niet de Beringstraat, maar Antarctica is het doel van de reis.

Het feit dat ik in de week van vertrek griep had maakt de uitdaging wel een stukje groter. Ter voorbereiding moest ik onder meer nog even naar de GGD om een vaccinatie te halen. Mijn reisschema moest ik mee nemen, dat is regel, bij het doornemen van het schema vroeg de arts echter of ik suïcidaal was. Ik vertelde hem dat dit niet het geval is, waarom in godsnaam? Nou.. het schema bleek nogal ambitieus en dan vooral de sterke hoogtestijging in een korte periode zonder acclimatisatie. Aha.. begrepe
